Nuts & Cap Nuts – Collection FAQs

1. What are nuts and cap nuts used for?
Nuts and cap nuts secure bolts and threaded fasteners in timber framing, furniture, gates, metalwork, and restoration projects. Cap nuts also provide a clean, finished look while protecting exposed threads.

2. How are your nuts and cap nuts different from standard hardware-store options?
Old West Iron hardware is made from higher-grade steel with tighter tolerances and optional hand-finished styling. Our cap nuts offer thicker walls, stronger threads, and more authentic historic shapes than mass-produced imports.

3. How do I choose the correct nut or cap nut size?
Select the nut that matches your bolt diameter (e.g., a 1/2 inch bolt uses a 1/2 inch nut). If using a cap nut, ensure you choose a depth that fully covers the exposed threads without bottoming out.

4. What finishes and textures are available?
Nuts and cap nuts can be ordered in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, antique iron, or hand-distressed finishes. These finishes are applied in-house to complement our decorative bolts, washers, and rustic hardware.

5. Are these nuts hand-forged?
The nut bodies are precision-machined or cast for strength and accuracy, while many decorative finishes and textures are hand-applied by our American blacksmiths for an authentic, old-world look.

6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most nuts and cap nuts ship within 1–10 business days depending on finish and order size. All decorative and custom-finished hardware is made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
