K Plates
K plates are the structural and decorative iron plates that support angled struts to a horizontal beam in the center of a truss. These iron brackets are available in all our hammered textures and all our finishes. Fasteners are sold seperately. For structural applications with heavy loads we recommend through bolting with 1/2" diameter or larger fasteners. We do not recommend any of our overhead metal plates be installed with clavos.
K-Plates – Collection FAQs
1. What are K-plates used for?
K-plates reinforce multi-directional timber connections where beams split or join at angles, such as in trusses, pergolas, pavilions, and decorative timber-frame structures. They add both structural integrity and architectural iron detail.
2. How are your K-plates different from standard steel brackets?
Old West Iron K-plates are crafted from thicker steel, cut with cleaner precision, and hand-finished with forged-style textures. Unlike thin, mass-produced brackets, our plates deliver true load support and historic Old World character.
3. How do I choose the right size K-plate for my project?
Measure the beam layout where the angled members meet and choose a K-plate large enough to span and reinforce the joint. Larger plates are ideal for heavy timbers, while smaller versions suit pergolas or decorative assemblies. Always match bolt diameter to the pre-drilled holes.
4. What finishes and textures are available?
K-plates are offered in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed finishes. Hammered, peened, and antique textures are applied in-house so your plates coordinate seamlessly with our straps, bolts, and rustic architectural hardware.
5. Are these K-plates hand-forged?
The bodies are precision-cut for strength, while edges, surface textures, rivet details, and finishes are hand-worked by our American blacksmiths. This creates the rugged, historical appearance associated with true wrought iron.
6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most K-plates ship within 1–10 business days, depending on size and finish. All decorative and custom-finished pieces are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
