Flat Plates & Architectural Straps – Collection FAQs

1. What are flat plates and architectural straps used for?
Flat plates and architectural straps reinforce beams, posts, mantels, gates, furniture, and timber-frame joints. They add both structural support and decorative detailing in rustic, historic, and handcrafted architectural projects.

2. How are your straps different from standard steel plates?
Old West Iron straps are made from thicker steel, cut with cleaner lines, and hand-finished with textures that replicate traditional blacksmith work. They offer greater durability and authentic old-world styling compared to mass-produced stamped plates.

3. How do I choose the right size strap or plate for my project?
Match the strap length to the joint or beam you’re reinforcing. Wider or thicker straps provide greater strength for heavy timbers, while smaller plates work well for cabinetry, gates, and decorative accents. Always size your fasteners to the strap’s hole diameter.

4. What finishes and textures are available?
Straps and plates can be ordered in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed finishes. Hammered, peened, and antique textures are applied in-house for a true wrought-iron look.

5. Are these straps hand-forged?
The plates themselves are precision-cut for accuracy, while textures, edge work, distressing, and finishes are hand-applied by our American blacksmiths. Many styles feature individually hammered details for historic authenticity.

6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most flat plates and straps ship within 1–10 business days, depending on finish and customization. All decorative and custom-finished pieces are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
