Gable End Plate
Gable end plates, also called V plates and angled L plates, are the structural and decorative iron plates that support a horizontal beam to the base of a ridge beam. These iron brackets are available in all our hammered textures and all our finishes. Fasteners are sold seperately. For structural applications with heavy loads we recommend through bolting with 1/2" diameter or larger fasteners. We do not recommend any of our overhead metal plates be installed with clavos.
Our Gable End Plates are available in sizes from 8" x 8" to 30" x 30" and all of our signature textures and finishes. Please contact our team via office@oldwestiron.com for a quote on custom sizes, styles, or finishes.
Gable End Plates – Collection FAQs
1. What are gable end plates used for?
Gable end plates are decorative and structural iron plates installed at the ends of gables, trusses, pergolas, pavilions, and timber-frame roofs. They reinforce key joints while adding a bold, architectural finishing touch.
2. How are your gable end plates different from standard metal brackets?
Old West Iron plates are made from thicker steel, cut with clean precision, and hand-finished with forged-inspired textures. Unlike mass-produced brackets, our plates offer authentic Old World styling and long-lasting structural integrity.
3. How do I choose the right size gable end plate?
Measure the width and layout of your gable or truss end, then select a plate that fits proportionally across the joint. Larger, heavier plates suit timber-frame structures; smaller options work well for pergolas and decorative accents. Be sure to match your bolt diameter to the pre-drilled holes.
4. What finishes and textures are available?
Gable end plates are available in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed finishes. Hammered, peened, and antique textures are applied in-house to complement our straps, bolts, and rustic timber hardware.
5. Are these gable plates hand-forged?
Plate bodies are precision-cut for uniform strength, while textures, edges, rivet details, and finishes are hand-applied by our American blacksmiths. This process gives each plate the rugged, historic look of true wrought iron.
6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most gable end plates ship within 1–10 business days, depending on size, finish, and customization. All decorative and custom-finished plates are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
