Rub Washers
Rub washers are small washers that sit underneath the head of the bolts or lags to keep a space in between the base of the fastener head and the wood or stone it is installed against. These hidden washers prevent the swirl marks that can happen when installing the nuts, bolts, lags and screws. Our rub washers are only available in a black finish and come in the following sizes, 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8" an 1".
RUB Washers – Collection FAQs
1. What are RUB washers used for?
RUB (Round, USS-Style Beveled) washers are commonly used in timber framing, structural connections, furniture building, and restoration work. Their thicker profile and classic round shape provide strong load distribution and a clean, finished look.
2. How are RUB washers different from standard flat washers?
RUB washers are heavier, wider, and designed to pair with larger structural bolts. They offer more stability and prevent bolts or nuts from sinking into wood, making them ideal for rustic, architectural, and heritage-style projects.
3. How do I choose the right washer size for my bolt?
Match the washer’s inner diameter to your bolt size (e.g., a 3/8 inch bolt uses a 3/8 inch washer). Then choose the outer diameter based on how much bearing surface your project needs—larger timbers benefit from larger washers.
4. What finishes and textures are available?
Our RUB washers come in multiple finish options including matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed textures. These finishes are designed to match Old West Iron’s decorative bolts, straps, and hardware.
5. Are RUB washers hand-forged?
The washer blanks are precision-stamped for consistency, while many of the finishes and textures are applied by our American blacksmiths. This gives even standard washers an authentic, old-world character.
6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most washers ship within 1–10 business days depending on finish and quantity. All decorative and custom-finished RUB washers are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
