L Plates

L plates are the structural and decorative iron plates that support a vertical post to the end a horizontal beam. These iron brackets are available in all our hammered textures and all our finishes. Fasteners are sold seperately. For structural applications with heavy loads we recommend through bolting with 1/2" diameter or larger fasteners. We do not recommend any of our overhead metal plates be installed with clavos.

Our L Plates are available in sizes from 12" x 8" to 30" x 30" and all of our signature textures and finishes. Please reach out to us via office@oldwestiron.com for a quote on custom sizes, styles, and finishes.

L-Plates – Collection FAQs

1. What are L-plates used for?
L-plates reinforce right-angle joints in beams, posts, shelves, mantels, gates, furniture, and cabinetry. They provide added stability where two surfaces meet at a 90-degree angle while adding a clean architectural iron detail.

2. How are your L-plates different from standard hardware-store brackets?
Old West Iron L-plates are made from thicker steel, cut with cleaner precision, and hand-finished with forged-style textures. Unlike thin stamped brackets, ours deliver authentic Old World character and long-lasting structural integrity.

3. How do I choose the right size L-plate for my project?
Choose an arm length that matches the scale of your joint—longer arms for heavy timbers and mantels, smaller plates for furniture or cabinets. Be sure your fasteners match the hole diameter and are proportional to the load requirements.

4. What finish and texture options are available?
L-plates are offered in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed finishes. Hammered, peened, and antique textures are applied in-house to coordinate with our straps, bolts, and rustic iron hardware.

5. Are these L-plates hand-forged?
The plate bodies are precision-cut for strength, while edges, rivet details, and textures are hand-worked by our American blacksmiths. This gives each piece the rugged, historic look associated with wrought-iron craftsmanship.

6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most L-plates ship within 1–10 business days, depending on size and finish. All decorative and custom-finished plates are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
