Post Caps – Collection FAQs

1. What are post caps used for?
Post caps protect the tops of fence posts, deck posts, pergola posts, and timber beams from moisture penetration and weathering. They also add a finished, architectural detail to outdoor structures.

2. How are your post caps different from standard home-store caps?
Old West Iron post caps are made from thicker steel and finished with forged-style textures for authentic Old World character. Unlike thin stamped or plastic caps, ours offer long-term durability and heirloom-quality craftsmanship.

3. How do I choose the right size post cap?
Measure the exact width of your post—4x4, 6x6, 8x8, or custom—and select a cap sized for a snug fit. For exposed outdoor settings, a tighter fit helps prevent water infiltration and prolongs the life of your post.

4. What finishes and textures are available?
Post caps come in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed finishes. Hammered, peened, and antique textures are applied in-house to match our straps, brackets, and exterior hardware.

5. Are these post caps hand-forged?
The cap bodies are precision-cut for accurate sizing, while edges, rivet details, textures, and surface finishes are hand-applied by our American blacksmiths for true wrought-iron authenticity.

6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most post caps ship within 1–10 business days, depending on size and finish. All decorative and custom-finished caps are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
