Which type of coating would make them waterproof? I have an outdoor picnic table and want to give it a little decorative feel

Are the Celtic cross nails measured diagonally or in the shape of a square? And I have ordered these previously, but they are too big for my project so I’m trying to find some thing a little smaller. Thank you.

The Celtic Cross Nail is not measured diagonally and is instead measured straight on the edge from corner to corner like a square.
