Iron Strapping / Metal Straps
Our iron strapping—also known as flat bar metal straps—is a versatile and durable solution for adding structural support and decorative detail to a wide variety of projects. Available by the foot in lengths up to 8 feet long and widths from 1" to 4", these heavy-duty flat bar straps are ideal for both functional reinforcement and old-world aesthetic appeal.
Choose from a range of handcrafted textures including:
Smooth iron for a clean, refined look
Hammered iron for traditional blacksmith texture
Distressed iron for a timeworn, antique feel
Riveted straps with welded decorative clavos for added character
Our iron metal straps are not only built to last—it’s also designed to inspire. Common uses include:
Wrapping exposed timber beams for a rustic architectural finish
Adding strength and style to barn doors, cabinets, and furniture
Framing windows or shutters with a forged iron edge
Creating unique baseboard or wall trim for industrial or farmhouse interiors
Wrapping tabletops or countertops for a custom metal edge
Crafting custom mantel brackets or gate borders
For even more character, you can customize your straps with hand-applied patinas and welded clavos to achieve a truly one-of-a-kind rustic or vintage look. Available in multiple thicknesses, and fully made to order, our strapping offers the strength of forged steel with the charm of handcrafted detail.
Iron Strapping – Collection FAQs
1. What is iron strapping used for?
Iron strapping reinforces beams, posts, mantels, trusses, gates, and timber-frame joints. It adds structural support while giving projects an authentic Old World, hand-forged look.
2. How is your iron strapping different from standard metal straps?
Old West Iron strapping is made from thicker steel, cut with clean precision, and finished with hand-hammered or forged-style textures. Unlike thin, mass-produced strips, ours offer true structural durability and historic craftsmanship.
3. How do I choose the right width and length of strapping?
Measure the beam, post, or joint you’re reinforcing and select a strap that fits proportionally across the span. Larger timbers benefit from wider strapping, while smaller cabinetry or decorative applications require narrower options. Match your bolt or screw size to the strap’s pre-drilled holes.
4. What finishes and textures are available?
Iron strapping is available in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed finishes. Hammered, peened, and antique textures are applied in-house to coordinate with our bolts, washers, hinges, and other rustic iron hardware.
5. Is your iron strapping hand-forged?
The strap bodies are precision-cut for accuracy, while textures, edges, rivet work, and finishes are hand-applied by our American blacksmiths. This gives each strap a rugged, historic, wrought-iron appearance.
6. What are the lead times and where is the strapping made?
Most iron strapping ships within 1–10 business days, depending on size, finish, and quantity. All decorative and custom-finished pieces are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
