The USS washer is a plain round washer in a set size per fastener diameter. These washers are available in all our finishes, but only come in our smooth texture. For washers with hammered textures please view our decorative washers.

These washers are the most commonly used type of washer, ideal for any project. USS washers are available in all finish colors and many sizes. Use these standard washers for all of your fastening needs from protecting wood from installation rings to simple bolt installation.

1. What are USS washers used for?
USS (United States Standard) washers are heavy-duty flat washers used in structural connections, timber framing, machinery, and restoration work. They provide a wider outside diameter for greater load distribution compared to SAE washers.

2. How are USS washers different from standard or SAE washers?
USS washers have a larger outer diameter and thicker profile, making them ideal for wood construction, oversized bolts, and applications where a broader bearing surface is needed. They offer more stability and prevent bolt heads or nuts from pulling into softer materials.

3. How do I choose the right washer size for my bolt?
Match the washer’s inner diameter to your bolt size (e.g., a 1/2 inch bolt uses a 1/2 inch washer). Then select the outer diameter based on how much coverage and support your project requires.

4. What finishes and textures are available?
USS washers can be ordered in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed finishes. Our custom finishes give these industrial-grade washers a rustic, historically inspired look that pairs well with decorative bolts and straps.

5. Are these washers hand-forged?
Standard USS washers are precision-stamped for uniformity, but our decorative finishes and textures are applied by our American blacksmiths to give them an authentic, old-world character.

6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most USS washers ship within 1–10 business days depending on finish and quantity. All decorative and custom-finished washers are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
