Gable Thru Plate

Gable thru plates, also called Y plates and angled T plates, are the structural and decorative iron plates that support a horizontal beam to a ridge beam. These iron brackets are available in all our hammered textures and all our finishes. Fasteners are sold seperately. For structural applications with heavy loads we recommend through bolting with 1/2" diameter or larger fasteners. We do not recommend any of our overhead metal plates be installed with clavos.

Our Gable Thru Plates are available in sizes from 12" x 8" to 36" x 32" and all of our signature textures and finishes. Please reach out to office@oldwestiron.com to speak with our team about custom sizes, finishes, and design styles.

Gable Thru Plates – Collection FAQs

1. What are gable thru plates used for?
Gable thru plates reinforce the peak of a gable or truss, securing structural members together while adding a finished, architectural iron detail. They’re commonly used in timber framing, pergolas, pavilions, barns, and exposed truss designs.

2. How are your gable plates different from standard steel plates?
Old West Iron thru plates are made from thicker steel, cut with cleaner lines, and hand-finished with forged-inspired textures. Unlike mass-produced brackets, our plates deliver both structural support and Old World decorative character.

3. How do I choose the right size gable thru plate?
Measure the width of your gable or truss connection and choose a plate that spans the joint proportionally. Larger plates suit heavy timber structures; smaller plates work well for pergolas or decorative applications. Always match your bolt size to the pre-drilled holes.

4. What finishes and textures are available?
Gable thru plates are offered in matte black, natural iron, oil-rubbed bronze, and hand-distressed finishes. Hammered, peened, and antique textures are applied in-house to coordinate with our bolts, washers, and rustic hardware.

5. Are these plates hand-forged?
The plate bodies are precision-cut for strength and accuracy, while textures, edge work, rivet details, and finishes are hand-applied by our American blacksmiths for authentic wrought-iron character.

6. What are the lead times and where are they made?
Most gable thru plates ship within 1–10 business days, depending on size and finish. All decorative and custom-finished plates are made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
