Hand-Crafted Fasteners for Every Build

At Old West Iron, we design and forge fasteners that go far beyond basic hardware. Each piece is crafted or finished by American blacksmiths in Idaho, using time-honored techniques that give our products the authentic weight, texture, and character found in antique ironwork. We offer one of the largest selections of decorative, structural, and specialty fasteners available — made to serve craftsmen, builders, and restorers who demand more than mass-produced hardware can offer.

Decorative Door Studs & Clavos

Our collection includes over a dozen styles of decorative door studs, ranging from petite 3/8" heads to bold 2" statement pieces. Every clavo can be finished in any of our patina options — from deep blacks to warm, naturally aged tones — allowing you to match new hardware to historic doors, cabinetry, gates, and furniture.

Wood Screws for Fine Furniture & Historic Work

We offer a wide selection of decorative wood screws, including round slotted heads, square pyramid heads, and specialty shapes sized from #3 to 1/4". These screws combine everyday utility with period-inspired styling, making them ideal for heritage builds, cabinetry, restoration work, and custom woodworking.

Square Head Lags: A Customer Favorite

Our square head lag bolts remain one of our most requested fasteners. Offered in smooth, hammered, and our signature hand-hammered pyramid head, these lags add rustic authenticity to timber beams, barn doors, iron straps, mantels, and other architectural projects. Available in diameters from 1/4" up to a heavy 3/4", each lag can be finished in any patina to perfectly coordinate with your build.

Machine Bolts, Decorative Nuts & Specialty Cap Nuts

Our line of machine-threaded bolts pairs with our range of decorative nuts — including hammered and smooth square nuts, hammered acorn nuts, and the hard-to-find square cap and pyramid cap nuts. These pieces bring handcrafted detail to mechanical fittings, exposed joinery, and restoration hardware where style matters just as much as function.

Decorative Washers & Custom Options

We offer an extensive array of decorative washers, from round to square designs in sizes ranging from 1¼" to 6". Plate washers can be customized with any size center hole, and USS washers — standard in black — can be finished in any patina to match your chosen fasteners. Whether you’re assembling timber trusses, crafting furniture, or completing a custom iron project, our washers are built to perform and made to be seen.

FAQPage

What are decorative washers used for?

Decorative washers are used to enhance the look of exposed bolt heads, lag screws, and fasteners on doors, beams, furniture, gates, and rustic architectural projects. They add both visual detail and additional bearing surface.

How are decorative washers different from standard washers?

Unlike thin, utilitarian hardware-store washers, our decorative styles are thicker, heavier, and designed with unique shapes and textures. They complement historic, rustic, and handcrafted ironwork for a more finished, intentional look.

How do I choose the right washer size for my fastener?

Select a washer with a center hole that matches your bolt or lag screw diameter. Then choose the outer diameter based on scale—the larger the timber, door, or beam, the larger the washer should be for balanced aesthetics.

Are these washers hand-forged?

The washer shapes are precision-cut for consistency, then many styles are hand-textured and finished by our American blacksmiths. This creates the authentic, period-inspired look Old West Iron is known for.

What finish and texture options are available?

Decorative washers can be ordered in matte black, oil-rubbed bronze, natural iron, and hand-distressed or hammered textures. Each finish is applied in-house to match our decorative bolts and straps.
