The Hidden Impact of Finishes on Hardware Longevity
par Maddison Mellem sur Dec 31, 2025When choosing hardware for your home or project, the design often steals the spotlight—but it's the finish that quietly determines how long your investment will last.
At Old West Iron, we believe hardware should outlive trends, withstand the elements, and look beautiful doing it. That’s why we offer a range of hand-applied finishes that do more than just look good—they protect.
Why Hardware Finishes Matter
The finish on your iron hardware is your first line of defense against rust, corrosion, UV damage, and wear—especially in outdoor or high-humidity areas. The right finish can extend the life of your hardware by decades, while the wrong one can lead to early failure.
Whether you’re installing hardware indoors or out, understanding your options helps you get the most value and longevity from your pieces.
Popular Iron Finishes & Their Benefits
🔸 Raw Iron
-
Best for: Authentic restorations, interior use
-
Aesthetic: Industrial, unfinished, or vintage
-
Note: Raw iron will naturally patina and rust over time unless sealed. Some customers prefer this living finish.
🔸 Rust Patina
-
Best for: Rustic, farmhouse, outdoor use
-
Aesthetic: Weathered, natural reddish-brown tone
-
Note: Rust patina is pre-aged and sealed, giving you the look of antique iron with added protection.
🔸 Oil-Rubbed Bronze
-
Best for: Traditional interiors, warm-toned décor
-
Aesthetic: Dark bronze with subtle coppery undertones
-
Note: This finish adds warmth and hides fingerprints better than raw iron.
🔸 Beeswax Finish
-
Best for: Indoor furniture and cabinetry
-
Aesthetic: Soft sheen, natural iron tone
-
Note: Beeswax adds a layer of moisture protection while preserving the raw look.
🔸 Black Oil or Flat Black
-
Best for: Modern farmhouse, outdoor accents
-
Aesthetic: Clean matte or satin black
-
Note: Adds a contemporary edge while protecting from oxidation.
What About Powder Coating?
Powder coating offers a hard shell-like surface that resists weather, UV, and scratches. However, we don’t offer it in-house due to its industrial nature and lack of historical authenticity. If you need powder coat for your project, we can:
-
Arrange for it through a local third party (extra fee and longer lead time), or
-
Ship your items raw so you can coordinate finishing after delivery.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Finishes: What to Choose
| Environment | Recommended Finishes |
|---|---|
| Indoor – Dry | Beeswax, Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Flat Black |
| Indoor – Humid (bathrooms, kitchens) | Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Black Oil |
| Outdoor – Covered | Rust Patina (sealed), Flat Black |
| Outdoor – Exposed | Rust Patina (sealed), Powder Coat (third party) |
