Dreaming of that perfect homemade pizza with a crispy crust, bubbling cheese, and your favorite toppings? A key player in achieving this culinary dream is your pizza oven door. However, ordering a handmade pizza oven door can be a bit confusing. But worry not! This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process step-by-step, ensuring you get the right door for your pizza oven.
Determine Which Size Category Works for You
Standard Size Pizza Oven Doors
Standard size pizza oven doors come in three basic sizes—small, medium, and large. These typically range between 12" x 20" and 15 1/2" x 26". If you haven't built your oven yet and don't have extra-large size requirements, this size category is ideal for you.
XL Pizza Oven Doors
For those planning on building a pizza oven with a larger opening, XL doors are the way to go. These doors cater to openings between 17" x 27" and 26" x 36". Just a note, we do not sell these doors as freestanding due to their extra weight.
Custom Sized Pizza Oven Doors
If your oven is already built and doesn't fit the standard categories, custom-sized doors are your best bet. Custom doors can be made to any size but remember, those larger than 16" x 26" cannot be sold as freestanding doors.
Choose Whether You Need a Hinged or Freestanding Door
Hinged Doors
Hinged doors are a popular choice as they are attached to your pizza oven via a hinged flange and swing open. These are available as both single and double doors, making them versatile and easy to use.
Freestanding Doors
Freestanding doors are not attached to the oven but can still come with a flange. These doors will lift away freely and usually have two handles. We do not recommend this option for doors larger than 16" x 26" due to the excess weight.
Choose a Design Style and Shape
Square/Rectangular or Arched Door
Depending on the design of your oven opening, you’ll need to choose either a square/rectangular or arched door.
Design Styles
Old West Iron offers a variety of design styles. Options range from simple, unadorned doors to those with elaborate decorative details. Most styles have both square and arched options available.
Choose Your Customizations
Arch Shape (If Arched Door)
You can choose between several arch shapes—segmental arch (straight sides), round arch (half circle), or pointed arch (rounded angular shape). The choice depends on the shape of your oven opening.
Insulation
Insulated doors are necessary if you plan on keeping the oven hot for more than eight hours or if your oven tends to lose heat quickly.
Hinge Location (If Hinged Door)
Choose whether you want the hinge on the left or right when facing the door. Remember, the handle will be on the opposite side.
Jamb Type and Placement
Decide if you want the jamb to sit on the face of the oven or line the inside of the oven opening. Choose between a three-sided or four-sided jamb.
Window
Adding a window made from ceramic glass can withstand up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Thermometer
A thermometer can be a handy addition to monitor the oven's internal temperature accurately.
Damper
Damper options are available if you want more control over airflow and oven temperature.
Texture
Select from four signature textures—smooth, distressed, hammered edges, and all hammered. Note that the all-hammered option may not be available for certain door sizes to avoid warping.
Finish
Choose from five hand-painted finishes. High Heat Black is recommended for its durability.
Handle Type
Opt for a standard metal spiral handle, a solid metal handle, or a wooden handle. Remember, all handles can heat up, so use a potholder.
Custom Door Templates
Custom Measurements
