7 Key Elements to creating a Farmhouse style kitchen

7 Key Elements to creating a Farmhouse style kitchen

Farmhouse Kitchens, whether you like the timeless classic farmhouse look, the trendy modern farmhouse style, the rustic farmhouse look, or the European farmhouse style. They all incorporate some of the same key elements.

Clean and functional yet homey and warm, farmhouse kitchens are all the rage, and its no wonder why. An open farm style kitchen is the perfect spot to entertain and spend time with family. Reclaimed wood and rustic black iron accents against crisp whites and greys create an alternative to traditional and contemporary design styles. There are many ways to add some farmhouse charm to a kitchen, read on for 7 key elements to creating a farmhouse style kitchen.

Open Shelving

Every kitchen needs storage, farmhouse style kitchens tend to incorporate open shelving, which can look nice when done right. To implement a farmhouse look rather than a modern look, use thick wood slabs and iron corbels for the shelving. For a traditional, bold farmhouse look, pipe corbels can achieve a pieced together, repurposed style. Alternatively, you could give your kitchen a European twist with some scrolled corbels such as the 324 – Roman Acanthus. Or keep it simple for a modern farmhouse effect with iron corbels such as 301-Tuscan or 309- Bean. To add organization, or just some décor - wicker baskets, unique jars and other storage can help. Storing other knickknacks, cookbooks, or a plant or two can give a little life to the shelf. You could also use them as storage for larger appliances such as stand mixers, pressure cookers, etc . to prevent clutter on the countertops.

 Georgian Iron Cabinet Handle

Iron Cabinet Handles

On traditional white farmhouse cabinetry, common stainless-steel knobs and handles can disappear. Use black handles and knobs to achieve a bold, contrasting element to the cabinetry. The 312- Cottage Iron handles are prefect for any farmhouse kitchen. For more decorative knobs, the 25-Embossed Round or the 24-round fleur De Lis can bring in the look of reclaimed or repurposed antique hardware.

Upgrade the pantry door

Age your pantry door with a vintage wash and add iron elements to create the look of a reclaimed door. Barn door hardware is a great option if you have space for a sliding door, this is perfect for pantry doors or even mud room or laundry room doors. Don’t be afraid to incorporate iron pieces throughout the home. Another great addition to any door is a kickplate. Prevent damage and staining to the door while keeping it decorative. Clavos, hinges straps (either faux or functional) and a unique door pull are also great additions. You can also incorporate any of these elements into cabinetry. Our Tudor and French Country design lines are great for any farmhouse kitchen.

Kitchen Island

Every farmhouse kitchen needs a rustic and gorgeous kitchen island. Add some flare with some iron corbels. This is a great place to use the same iron corbels as the shelving. Pipe corbels offer an impressive DIY element. The 301-Tuscan or 309-Bean corbels are also great options for the kitchen island.  Depending on how much room you have around the island, this can be a convenient location to store cast iron pots and pans with out hiding them. By using some hooks such as the 05, or 313 designs, you can store your cast iron on the side of the island. Hanging them under the open shelving is also a great spot to show them off.

Make it personal

Add some dimension to your shiplap or subway tiles with a custom iron cutout or Iron letters. A cross, cowboy cutout, or a quaterfoil are great options for something simple yet decorative. Iron letters are a perfect war to bring your favorite word, phrase or name into the home. A customized name sign fits perfectly behind your stove.
